Mrs. Bettie Reid was the first president of Women’s Missionary Society, organized in 1922. United Methodist Men came years later in 1958 with Preston Kennedy as the first President. Rev. W.Q. Scruggs was pastor at that time. In 1928, the back of the one room church was made into six Sunday school rooms. In 1938, this building was replaced by a brick structure with a full size basement. Rev. L.Z. Hurly was pastor at that time.
Reidland Methodist Church became a station in 1944 with a full time preacher Rev. Homer Johns. Mrs. Johns organized the Women’s Service Guild with Roberta Rothwell as President. In 1954, six Sunday additional school rooms and two restrooms were added to the brick structure. The basement and kitchen was remodeled. Rev. George McKelvy was pastor.
During the pastorate of Rev. John E. Stavely in 1966 and 1967, the educational building was expanded and our present sanctuary was constructed. When Rev. Bill McClarin was pastor, the old sanctuary was remodeled as a two story educational building with a new kitchen and fellowship hall in the basement. In 1975, when Rev. John Archer was pastor, another additional of a pastor’s study, secretary’s office and choir room was made.
The next large project was the construction of a building housing a new fellowship hall and large kitchen; also, a handbell room and choir room as added. This was while Rev. Bill Riley was pastor. A playground was provided for the preschool children in memory of Rev. Ronald Allen in 1996. |
